We created Movement Funders to solve a clear problem organizers and campaigners face time and time again: the siloing of our campaigns, the lack of capacity building movement infrastructure, resource scarcity and hoarding, and organizer burnout. We believe a cooperative approach provides campaigners with the tools to solve all of these problems and the community to build together.
Why a co-op?
We believe in democratically worker-run and movement owned infrastructure. We created this non-profit cooperative to ensure the redistribution of surplus profit is embedded as our core value. We believe that creating a sustaining structure we can build change capacity for organizers, fundraisers, and campaigners to stabilize income and build stronger movement infrastructure.
Who should join?
It’s easier to frame it this way: if you’re looking to get rich we’re not the cooperative for you.
Our co-op has 3 primary types of members who are united in an intersectional and re-distributive progressive movement building work:
- New & Emerging Movement Builders: Organizers and campaigners looking to increase their skills, network, build community, and gain the fundraising skills to drive their sustainable projects and campaigns are our core membership base.
Some are brand new to change work and see this as a place to start learning. Others are seasoned campaigners looking to build their skills in fundraising best practices. - Experienced & Focused Movement Builders: This co-op is also designed for campaigners who know their core skills and understand that fundraising work is not an area of movement work they want to dedicate their time and energy towards.
The co-op is a practical tool for their campaigns, it allows them to access a team of seasoned value-aligned movement builders and fundraisers that can secure the resources to grow and sustain their campaigns and projects. - Movement Fundraisers: Our last group of members are organizers and campaigners who currently work in or want to gain experience in movement resourcing and fundraising roles. They are freelancers, fundraising workers, event planners, grant writers, and campaign builders.
The co-op creates the space, structure, support, mentorship, and training opportunities for emerging fundraisers and meaningful work opportunities for all movement workers regardless of their experience level.
Seasoned fundraisers will have access to immediate sustaining paid work opportunities on meaningful campaigns through the co-op. Future income stabilization projects as well as worker health and dental and retirement plans are also in development.
